How to Convert Minutes to Decimal Hours
Decimal portion of an hour = minutes / 60. Divide the minutes by 60, then add that fraction to the whole hours.
The conversion formula
Decimal hours = whole hours + (minutes / 60)
For example, 15 minutes is 15 / 60 = 0.25 hours. The minutes become a fraction of an hour rather than digits after a decimal point.
30 / 60 = 0.50 hours, and 45 / 60 = 0.75 hours. For 20 minutes, 20 / 60 = 0.333333... hours: the 3 repeats.
Common conversions
These examples show the decimal portion for common minute values. The displayed values are rounded to four decimal places where needed.
| Minutes | Decimal hours |
|---|---|
| 0 | 0.0000 |
| 5 | 0.0833 |
| 10 | 0.1667 |
| 15 | 0.2500 |
| 20 | 0.3333 |
| 25 | 0.4167 |
| 30 | 0.5000 |
| 35 | 0.5833 |
| 40 | 0.6667 |
| 45 | 0.7500 |
| 50 | 0.8333 |
| 55 | 0.9167 |
| 60 | 1.0000 |
Example: 8 hours 20 minutes
Start with the whole hours, then convert the minutes: 8 + (20 / 60) = 8.333333... hours. At two decimal places, the displayed result is 8.33 hours.
The repeating value is rounded for display. It is not exactly 8.33 hours.
Do not read minutes as decimal digits
30 minutes is half an hour, so 30 / 60 = 0.50. That makes 8 hours 30 minutes equal to 8.50 hours, not 8.30 hours.
The same rule applies to every minute value. Divide by 60 before adding the result to the whole hours.
Use the conversion
Convert hours and minutes with the Decimal Hours Calculator, including conversions back to hours and minutes.
If you have clock-in and clock-out times, first calculate the duration and subtract unpaid breaks. Use the Work Hours Calculator, or follow the hours worked formula and examples.
For a weekly time card or a set of entries, sum the worked minutes before converting the total. Rounding every entry first can change the sum. The Time Card Calculator totals a Monday-Sunday week, while the Timesheet Calculator handles flexible entries.
