Break Time Calculator
Calculate one or more breaks, separate paid and unpaid break time, and optionally see net worked hours for a shift.
How to use the break time calculator
Enter each break's start and end time, then choose Paid or Unpaid. Add another row for a second break. Shift times are optional; add them when you want gross shift time and net worked time.
How break duration is calculated
Break duration is the elapsed time from its start to its end. If the end is earlier than the start, the break is treated as crossing midnight.
Net worked time = gross shift time - unpaid break time
Paid vs. unpaid breaks
Paid breaks count toward total break time but are not deducted from net worked time. Unpaid breaks are deducted when an optional shift is entered. Choose the type that matches your own records; this tool does not decide how a break should be classified.
Multiple breaks
Use one row for each break period. Breaks cannot overlap, because overlapping time should not be counted twice.
Break deductions from work hours
For a shift from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM with a 30-minute unpaid break, gross time is 9 hours and net worked time is 8h 30m, or 8.50 decimal hours. Paid break time remains part of the shift total.
For one simple shift with one break field, use the Work Hours Calculator. For multiple shift segments, use the Shift Hours Calculator.
Worked example
A 9-hour shift has a 30-minute unpaid lunch and a 15-minute paid break. Total break time is 45 minutes, with 30 unpaid minutes deducted. Net worked time is 8h 30m, or 8.50 decimal hours.
Frequently asked questions
Can I calculate breaks without entering a shift?
Yes. Break rows still show each duration and the paid, unpaid, and total break minutes. Add shift times when you also need net worked time.
What happens if two breaks overlap?
The calculator flags both rows and does not present a completed summary until you adjust the times.
Does the calculator decide whether a break is legally paid?
No. You choose Paid or Unpaid. WorkCalcLab does not make payroll or labor-law determinations.
Can I convert the net result to another format?
Use the Decimal Hours Calculator for a standalone hours-and-minutes conversion. Use the Time Card Calculator for weekly work-hour totals.
