Time Duration Calculator
Calculate the full elapsed duration between two local dates and times, including intervals longer than 24 hours.
How to calculate time duration
Enter a start date and time, then an end date and time. The calculator compares the two local wall-clock values and updates the duration immediately.
Duration formula
Duration = end date and time - start date and time
Calendar days are converted to whole seconds, then the end value is compared with the start value. An end before the start is flagged instead of producing a negative result.
Durations longer than 24 hours
Date inputs make longer intervals explicit. For example, October 5 at 8:00 AM to October 6 at 10:30 AM is 1 day, 2 hours, and 30 minutes, or 26.5 total hours.
Total hours, minutes, and seconds
The normalized result shows days, hours, minutes, and seconds. Total hours and minutes may include decimals when the duration includes smaller units.
Worked examples
October 5, 2026 at 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM is 9 hours, or 540 minutes.
October 5, 2026 at 10:00 PM to October 6 at 6:00 AM is 8 hours.
From 8:00:30 AM to 8:01:45 AM, the duration is 1 minute 15 seconds.
Frequently asked questions
Does this calculator use time zones?
No. It treats the values as local wall-clock dates and times. Timezone and daylight saving transitions are not modeled, so an interval spanning a clock change may need a separate adjustment.
What happens when the start and end are the same?
The duration is zero. The calculator does not assume that identical values represent a full day.
What if the end is before the start?
The calculator shows a validation message. Choose the correct dates and times instead of allowing a negative duration.
Which calculator should I use for a simple clock-time difference?
Use the Hours Calculator for two clock times without dates. Use the Time Calculator to add or subtract durations, or the Work Hours Calculator for a work shift with an unpaid break.
